Nanosized anatase TiO(2) single crystals with 18% {001} facets have a raised conduction band minimum by 0.1 eV, and exhibit photocatalytic activity both for generating *OH radicals and for splitting water into hydrogen that is markedly superior--by factors of 5.6 and 8.2, respectively--to reference ca. 3 microm anatase TiO(2) with 72% {001} facets.

Hydrogenated titania: synergy of surface modification and morphology improvement for enhanced photocatalytic activity.

Surface-hydrogenated anatase TiO(2) (TiO(2)-H) nanowire-microspheres were prepared by converting protonated titanate nanotube to TiO(2)-H under a hydrogen atmosphere. We show that TiO(2)-H nanowire-microspheres have Ti-H and O-H bonds on their surface and exhibit improved visible-light absorption and highly enhanced photocatalytic activity.

Octahedral titanium(IV) oxide (TiO(2)) crystallites with exposed anatase [101] facets exhibited relatively high photocatalytic activity for oxidative decomposition of organic compounds and low activity for hydrogen evolution in the absence of molecular oxygen, probably due to the characteristics of the anatase [101] surface.
